Rules/Policies

  1. Student Work. We take submissions from anyone in the McDaniel student body.  Submissions aren’t confined to students involved in journalism. Teacher work is not included, though exceptions may be made. No AI is allowed and students may be asked to explain their process or show screenshots of their work in progress if its originality is in doubt.
  2. School-appropriate. We allow swearing, violence, and implied sexual content. However, we do not allow explicit sexual content, promotion of hate groups or gangs, or hate speech. Slurs used in a reclamatory or poetic context are allowed,  but we do not allow them if they are used as insults; even if the student is in the group the slur refers to.
  3. Privacy. We don’t allow work that reveals sensitive personal details of non-consenting students, and will ask consenting students if they’re certain about their decision. We also do not allow any work that mocks or “calls out” a student, whether by name or not.

Further Details

Explicit sexual content includes full-frontal nudity (whether sexualized or artistic), including all full-bodies and detailed upper-bodies, and characters in lingerie or nude but partially concealed participating in sex, kink, or close-to-sexual actions (such as making out). Sexual content that is allowed is artistic nudity from the back or concealed, fully clothed characters making out, and imagery that could be associated with kink  (dog collars, a chained character, etc) in a piece that is not otherwise sexualized. In written work, sexual content that is disallowed is explicit sex scenes. Sexual content that is allowed is fade-to-black and characters making sexual jokes or references. A written work with a significant number of sexual references will have a warning at its beginning.

Fanwork (fanart, AMVS, etc) is allowed, though we prefer original work and it won’t be published outside the free online version of the Mosaic for legal purposes.

Memes and fun videos are allowed, though are less likely to make it into the magazine if up against serious artwork.
